Blog 3 Response to "Hype"

People have been fed advertisements for a while now,but compared to a long time ago the number of ads you take in daily have increased tremendously. In "Hype" by Kalle Lasn the author talks about how we are bombarded by ads in our daily lives. The  increase  in  commercial   advertising  has happened  so  fast that  we  haven’t  quite  woken  up  to  the absurdity of it. I agree with Kalle Lasn that ''Right now ads are the most prevalent and toxic mental pollutant.''
Ads use to be commonly seen on billboards, buses, and stadiums. In "Hype" it states "Every day an estimated 12 billion display ads, 3 million radio commercials, and more than 200,000 TV commercials are dumped into North America’s  collective  unconscious." The number is very high to believe but its true. Corporate America has come up with the idea that anywhere your eyes can rest should be filled with a logo or a product message.Such as children at school seeing pepsi and snack ads. While filling your car with gas the nozzle will be embellished with an ad.VideoCarte has installed interactive screens on supermarket carts so you will see ads while you shop.
Through my experience I have noticed how excessively we are shown ads. When I wait for a train on the platform there are movie ads everywhere, and when i get on the train there are even more ads inside. While watching a  movie stream on the Internet you will get an ad of the beginning, and more after short periods in the movie. Trucks have giant logos on them,Buildings have many posters,Theaters will have 10 minute previews before a movie.Ads are everywhere and Corporate America has taken it to the extreme.
Ads are the biggest mental pollutant out right now. Even though advertisements aren't dangerous,we are wasting many resources when we have so many around.I bet everyone in America can relate on how they are spammed by ads each day. Some companies don't even need as much spotlight as they are handing out to the public.Corporate America will probably keep increasing its advertising because having more profit will always make them happy.

Blog 2 Summary of "Allegory of the Cave"

The passage "The Allegory of the Cave" speaks about liberation. The main character Socrates talks about prisoners in a cave since childhood to his friend Glaucon. He explains the experiences that they have endured their whole lives. Their necks cant move as they are chained,so they only see what is in front of them which is only shadows. Then Socrates tries to make Glaucon envision a prisoner escaping from the cave and seeing reality. If there was an instructor guiding him to name things as they pass the prisoner would feel perplexed. Then after seeing what reality has to offer he is captured and returned to the cave where shadows are the only reality, and his inmates would feel as if he had gone crazy for leaving the cave because he would fall into a deep sorrow after being free and having returned.

Summary of "Hype"

The article "Hype" talks about how ads bombard us on our everyday life.In the article it explains how ads use to be more common to find on billboards, buses, and stadiums, but Corporate America has decided that any place where you can rest your eyes on should be filled with a product message or logo. They have ads on gas nozzles, but the most surprising i read was an interactive screen on shopping carts. The article says ''there are around 12,320,000,000 ads being fed to us each day'' and i think to myself what a large number.Ads have become very important, and I think its the easiest way to gain customers.

Blog 1 'Hype'

Whenever your outside whether it's taking a walk, or going to work your vision will see many things. In New York while being outside you will take in the scenery. While doing so you will probably see many advertisements.
You may not know but your subconscious is probably being fed every ad you see.
I agree advertisements are the biggest mental pollutant.Ads use to be common to see in buses, billboards, and stadiums. Times have changed as corporate America thinks anywhere your eyes can rest should be filled with a logo or a product message.

You fill a car with gas and the nozzle has an advertisement. Children at school see pepsi and snack ads. When i wait for a train on the platform there are movie ads everywhere. When the train arrive there are broadway play ads and many other inside. It is inescapable I think corporate America has gone a bit extreme by embellishing so much with ads.
In conclusion, even though ads aren't dangerous or anything having spread them everywhere isn't so good. Reducing them a bit would be nice because some companies don't really need much spotlight. Realistically they will probably keep adding more, and more.
